UptimeRobot is one of the biggest names in hosted uptime monitoring, and for HTTP/ping/port checks it does the job well. VPN tunnels are simply outside what its check types can express.
What UptimeRobot genuinely does well
- Extremely generous free tier for basic checks
- Mature platform with years of operational history
- Broad integrations ecosystem
| Feature | UptimeRobot | ExitProbe |
|---|---|---|
| VPN protocol awareness | None — port/HTTP checks only | Native WireGuard, OpenVPN, IKEv2, VLESS, VMess, Trojan, Shadowsocks, Hysteria 2 |
| Tunnel handshake testing | No | Yes, every check |
| Exit IP anti-pooling verification | No concept of exit IPs | Core feature since day one |
| Private probe locations | Fixed public regions | Run your own probes anywhere |
| Config import (URI / .ovpn / wg-quick) | N/A | Paste and go, format validated |
| VPN-specific incident detail | Port open/closed | Which protocol, which region, why it failed |
Bottom line
A solid general-purpose monitor. If all you need is "is port 443 open?", either tool works. If you need "do my users actually have a working tunnel?", that is our entire product.
